Watching the Sky

Especially these days.

We had a tornado touch down near our tiny town on Sunday afternoon, and the shopping center near my sister's house was hit by a twister the same day. Colorado is not the state most pestered by this wicked weather, though; we're just west of tornado alley and only ninth on the list of twister hit states. Our terrain in eastern Colorado, though, is much like our tornado alley neighbors, Kansas and Nebraska, two of the top five states for tornado touch-downs and we see more of this dangerous weather than we'd like between May and July.

A couple years ago, when we were living in Western Colorado, a tornado touched down here on the farm; yanked a trailer on our property off of its foundation and ripped the roof off of our neighbor's barn. Thankfully, we weren't here at the time, and our neighbor was fine, too. But, we know to be very wary. We keep our eye on the sky, our ear out for sirens, and a stack of vhs movies and a tv in the cellar with our other provisions.

(We watched Cinderella last Sunday while the sirens blared and the wind blew outside. A good time was had by all.)

Frowning sky over the early spring trees at our house.
Smiling sky east of our house.
Little lost cloud drifting through the sky over McClure Pass, CO.
Sunset from our campfire in the backyard last Friday.

To hook up with lots of other sky-watchers, go here!

Much as I love rain and thunderstorms, I do not like tornados and wish so much that we had a basement here. Have always wanted a basement (or cellar, like my Grandma in NE had).

You pictures are so pretty.

blessings and hugs,

marcy

Ok..now, truely, how many of the boys were out watching for tornados? I remember growing up, there was one just a few miles away..We were all on the roof watching it...Seems a bit crazy now though..

Ha! Well, yeah, you are absolutely right about that little problem, Anne... The boys weren't here Sunday, or, yep, they'd 've been out in the middle of it. &:o)

I love the sunset shot! It's beautiful. The colors are so vivid.

Since I live in Arkansas, I know all about tornadoes, unfortunately.

Thanks so much for playing along!
