Why We Watch the Super Bowl
Gabriel giggled and giggled over this and aked me if we could watch it every day.
I expect everyone else in the world already seen this commercial, but we don't have a TV feed so this stuff is new to us. Not that we really feel deprived, mind you. But, we do get a huge kick out of the clever ads like this. Dan's got the TV rigged with some old-fashioned rabbit ears and something digital -- Who knows what? I don't understand it... But, anyway, we'll be getting the Super Bowl here this Sunday. Dan and my brother will be rooting for Pittsburgh.
But most of us here will watch for the commercials.
And the guacamole.

Our Rockies

The broad shoulders of the Rocky Mountains are slumped a little this morning.
And the purple glow of the season is fading like the sunset going to sleep over our mountains.
But we Rockies fans will sleep well this winter.
We'll sleep peacefully, when all is said and done, and the disappointment wears off, because, you see, we won before the season even started.
Our team is a family, home grown. Our men are good men, our organization a truly class act. Our boys (and they are, for the most part little more than boys) had an amazing year and we're so proud of them we're bursting.
Don't be mistaken, we here in the Rocky Mountain west know we've already won in some of the most important ways.
We'll sleep peacefully through the winter here in Colorado, dreaming of the spring.
When the first crack of the bat on opening day will wake us to a purple sunrise.
And then you just watch our boys! They'll be back. Ours is a young team, still learning, just on the way up. That purple glow will continue to light up the summer baseball sky for many years.
We can't wait for Opening Day, 2008!
Our Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox!

WAHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

THE ROCKIES ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!
The men in our family, none of them at home with us, unfortunately, have yelled themselves hoarse tonight! We don't have a tv feed in our home, so we girls are going to have to wait to get more of the story tomorrow from the boys, or wait to read the news online when they write it. We did get texted updates throughout the evening from our wandering sportsfans who were near big screen televisions (Yeah, this was one reason they were all glad they weren't home today, I bet!), and it was clear, even from the few words we read on my tiny pink phone, what a nailbiter the game was! What a day for the Rockies!

They're still in it!

The Rockies play the Padres tonight in Denver (5:30 our time) for a spot in the playoffs. It's a miracle that they've gotten this far! Have you seen their rookie line up? Even if you're not a baseball fan, you've just got to appreciate the drama.

This is The Ball
That Kevvy Caught,(Bare-handed)
That Matt Holliday Hit,
(A Rocket to the Left Field Bleachers)
At Batting Practice,
On Friday Night,
At the Rockies' Game ~
The One They Lost ~
Which Doesn't Matter,
Because They're Still Barely In It
Having won 11-1 Last Night,
After the Padres lost...
And It's a Long Story,
But How I Understand it,
The Playoffs are Still Just Barely in Sight,
This Afternoon,
Over Chips and Dip
In Front of Granma and Granpa's Big Screen TV...
Go Rockies!

Go Rockies!
So, guess where my wh and second son are tonight?? There was no earthly force that would keep them from going to see the Rockies.
The five and a half hour commute home my husband will have to make after the game? No problem. It is understood that world series potential comes before any notion of sleep.
The fact that the line for tickets started early this morning, with men bearing large cups of coffee, coolers full of sandwiches, and campchairs? No biggie. Kevvy gladly stood in line for 31/2 hours this afternoon to get the only tickets to be had, in the Rockpile, $4 seats in the nosebleed section where all the real fans sit, anyway.
It's eleven games in a row now that our team has won, and I'm told (have been told by three different males in my family today) that they have a shot at the playoffs. If God watches baseball, we can't help but think he'll be rooting for our Rockies tonight. We may be biased, but we think we've got the nicest bunch of guys in the sport.

In Sporting News...
~ Because I take my role of supportive wife seriously,*
~ Because I have to have at least a glint of interest in my eye when my wh answers the simple question, "Who's winning?" with a half hour's explanation of the whole season,
~ Because I have six sons, most of whom play the game or want to,**
~ Because one of my earliest cozy memories is of Dad's Dad, "Pappy," smoking Camel cigarettes, drinking Schlitz and listening to the Orioles on the radio while teasing us grandchildren,
~ Because, even though I'm a half-conscious, fairweather fan who really likes the sport because I like the way it sounds in the background, I cannot deny the history and poetry of the game,
~ Because there really is a good moral lesson for the children in a team that just doesn't give up...
I Just Gotta Love the Colorado Rockies!

* This post is dedicated to my wh, a lifetime baseball player and fan. Hi, sweetie!
** Gabe (3) tells us now, much to his older brothers' pride and satisfaction, that he's going to go to college and play baseball.
