Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Friday, July 16th

"Whosever dies wearing this Scapular, shall not suffer eternal fire."

Scapular Promise of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to Saint Simon Stock, July 16, 1251.

Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel began among the Carmelites in thanksgiving for all the favours received through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The entire Latin church, traditionally speaking, observes the Feast and recalls principally the vision of Saint Simon Stock. The Carmelites had been expelled from the East under persecution and many powerful enemies were denying that the Order had the right to exist and develop in the West. The friars, especially the Prior General, Saint Simon Stock, implored their Mother's help. The Blessed Virgin appeared to Simon on July 16, 1251, gave him the holy Scapular of Carmel and promised, "this will be to you and to all Carmelites a privilege, that he who dies in this will not suffer eternal fire." All opposition to the Order was swallowed up in this sign of Mary's good will.

It is significant to note that the final appearance of Our Lady to Saint Bernadette was on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 1858, and that during the final vision at Fatima Our Lady appeared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding the Brown Scapular.

TO THE QUEEN OF CARMEL
O glorious Virgin Mary! Queen of Carmel, Mother of God and of poor sinners; special Protectress of all those who wear thy holy Scapular, I supplicate thee, by the glory that has been accorded thee by the Incarnate Word in choosing thee for His Mother, to obtain for me the pardon of my sins, amendment of my life, salvation of my soul, consolation in my pains, and in particular the grace I now ask, provided it be conformable to the will of thy divine Son. Amen.
