This feast differs somewhat from the Feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross (May 3rd), as it more particularly commemorates the triumph of the Cross, remembering Constantine's victory after his conversion by the sign of the cross in Heaven, but, even more so, celebrating the key Christian victory over the Turks who had taken possession of the relics of the True Cross in the early seventh century. From the Introit of today's Mass: Gal. 6, 14
But it behooves us to glory in the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ: in Whom is our salvation, life, and resurrection; by Whom we are saved and delivered. Ps. 66, 2 May God have mercy on us, and bless us; may He cause the light of His countenenance to shine upon us, and may He have mercy on us.
