After almost twenty-two years...

It's the end of an era.
William,child number ten,at three and a half years old, is finally, 100% officially potty-trained!
.
An Ode in Recognition of the Feat
.
I've changed them sitting, standing, lying down;
I've changed them on car hoods, bathroom floors, all around town;
I've changed them on forest paths, in grassy parks, on stadium bleachers,
And occasionally in public restrooms appointed with hygenic diaper-changing features.
.
My sweet little cherubs, all ten little dears --
Four diapers a day (estimated conservatively) over twenty-two years --
Doing what babies do... do...  You know we've paid  a few pipers
With countless millions of wet wipes and over thirty-two thousand diapers!
.
Will I miss this season, these hectic years?
All the story books, spit-up cloths, and alligator tears?
The diaper rashes, finger plays, and tippy cup lids...
Sitting in the back pew with noisy little kids?
.
Well...
Though I can't believe how fast the years go,
In a word, friends, I have to say: No.
I'm good and ready to put down the plow.
I'm looking forward to spoiling my grandkids now!

  1. I think your family single-handedly caused global warming.

    Just kidding! Congratulations on your milestone. It's bittersweet.

  3. What incredible talent...at first I thought you had snagged this from the Internet. It's good, it's terrific in fact and I think you ought to try to submit it to a magazine of some sort!!

    I didn't do my usual rhyming today due to my friend Cheryl and posting about her, but you did good enough for both of us and then some!

    blessings and hugs,

  7. I love this Lisa, it's sort of good timing too as when I went to my son's house Sunday afternoon my 15 month old grandson Jack was giving my DIL a fit as she was trying to put his diaper and clothes on. As I saw her frustration I told her I'll do it. I sat down next to Jack and said "Now look little boy , grandma's going to put your clothes on and you are going to just lay there and stop fussing!" Well Lisa the look that I got was priceless. Not fear, but confusion! He told me that he wanted to play the piano and after that I set him up by it.
    I totally understand your feelings. My last one (Katie) has three and a half years before collage, will I miss her ? Yes . But I am still looking forward to it! Love Di

  10. Yahooooooo! I love you line: "Doing what babies do...do..."

    Your poem reminded me of my husband...the engineer...who liked to keep track and calculate the number of diapers each child went through...he's kind of funny that way

  11. Christopher decided at 2 and a half that he wanted to go potty and did a wee. I was gob smacked. None of my other children have ever done that. We will be back into diapers in 5 months.
